The Polyplastics Group has announced the introduction of a new grade of DURACON (R) Polyoxymethylene (POM), offering improved diesel fuel resistance for the production of fuel system components from injection molded automotive. The new material complements Polyplastics' signature POM DURACON (R) portfolio, which is already widely used for automotive fuel system components due to its superior mechanical properties, heat and fuel resistance, and excellent moldability. 

The newly launched new grade, DURACON (R) H140DR, offers superior performance over competing materials and is targeted at global markets. Although driving systems will shift toward electrification, diesel engines will remain in use for certain commercial vehicles, according to Polyplastics. Low quality diesel contains a high concentration of acid and sulfate, which has a negative effect on POM.

Fuels containing a high concentration of sulfate act on the main polymer chains and facilitate decomposition into POM. Tests show the percentage change in weight (decomposition rate) when POM is immersed at high temperature in test diesel fuel with a high sulfate concentration. DURACON (R) H140DR has superior strength compared to a competitor's improved diesel fuel resistant POM and standard material.

DURACON (R) H140DR has a higher melt flow rate (MFR) than the standard grade M90-44, resulting in good formability. It is also denser, with a smaller crystal size, and has a high degree of crystallization compared to the standard M90-44 grade.

The new grade has the same level of deformation fracture properties versus competing materials, and appears to have sufficient long-term mechanical strength properties as well. Environmental stress fracture tests reveal that DURACON (R) H140DR has a high resistance to external factors such as acid rain and various acidic solvents used in cars.
